Dear Members;
We are pleased to inform you that the diabetes program will continue
into the new fiscal year, April 2005 March 2006, and we have a whole new list of
activities planned. One of our new activities
will be a walking challenge. We would like to invite all of our members to
join us in a TREK ACROSS THE ISLAND, this trek
would involve keeping track of all of your physical activity and adding it up to equal
enough kilometers to walk across our beautiful island.
Let me explain how this will work.
Every 10 minutes of physical activity you do will equal 1 km walked.
EXAMPLE: 10
minutes vacuuming (1 km)
+ 15
minutes gardening (1.5 km)
+ 15
minutes walking___ (1.5 km)
= 40 minutes of activity = 4 km
If you decide to join our challenge we will send you a journal to
keep track of your kms and every few months you will be asked to send in your journal to
the diabetes coordinator and she will evaluate them and award prizes to members with the
highest kms for that time period and other prizes.
If you would like to join this TREK ACROSS THE ISLAND you can fill
out the enclosed registration form or call the diabetes coordinator at the numbers given. The estimated kms from Port au Basque to St. Johns
is 902 km (given by the tourism department of
NL & LAB), and we hope that the members can make this journey together. So come on out and join in the fun and
prizes in our TREK ACROSS THE ISLAND and help fight off diabetes while we are at it. Lets see how many kilometers you can do. This challenge will last from May 1, 2005, to
March 1, 2006, with a grand prize winner awarded before the end of March, look for updates
on this and other events in the FNI newsletters and on the website www.fni.nf.ca and log on to the diabetes page. Any questions please feel free to call the
diabetes coordinator. If more than one person
in your household would like to register just put all of the necessary information on a
sheet of paper and send it in to the address given, we hope everyone will join the more
the merrier.
