FNI Employment & Training Programs and Services
Programs are funded through an Aboriginal Human Resources Development Agreement (AHRDA) which is scheduled to terminate in 2009.
All aboriginal people residing on the island of Newfoundland are eligible to apply.

› Individual training (educational and skills development)
Opportunities available include:
- Post-secondary training, including:*
- college programs (maximum three years)
- university study (maximum last four semesters of full time study with a minimum of 3 courses in each semester), plus one work term)
- Adult Basic Education (ABE), with support possibly extending into post-secondary training
- Distance education
- Disability programs
- Specialized training through a company that will guarantee graduates full-time, long-term employment
We also entertain proposals that fall under the guidelines of Human
Resource Development Canada’s Employment Benefits and Support Measures
programs.

› Employment Programs
Designed to suit the needs of members with physical and mental disabilities looking to obtain and/or retain employment.
We welcome proposals from applicants.
Graduate incentive program
Provides financial assistance to graduates of a FNI-funded training program looking for employment. Incentives for graduates and employers include:
- a lump sum bonus to the graduates upon hiring
- income support for job shadowing
- wage subsidies
- have completed training no longer than two years prior to the application date
- not have worked in the field of study for more than four consecutive weeks since graduation
Job creation programs (JCP)
For unemployed aboriginals wishing to improve their work experience with meaningful employment in their profession.
JCP contracts with employers must create long-term employment.
Self-employment assistance program
Provides financial assistance to aboriginals wishing to start their own business.
Wage subsidy program
Helps aboriginals prepare for, obtain, and maintain full-time new employment.
Provides monetary incentives for employers to hire individuals who they may not consider hiring in the absence of a subsidy.
Both native and non-native businesses/organizations are eligible to apply as employers, but the employee applicant must be Aboriginal.

› Youth Employment
Provides employment experience for aboriginal youth interested in pursuing a career with the RCMP.
- 8 weeks in July-August.
- placements at nearest RCMP detachment
Applications advertised each year in December or January.

To submit an application:
Download the appropriate application form, fill it in completely, and send it to the office in your area.

Four dates annually (does not apply to RCMP Cadets Program):

Approval process:
- labour market needs
- initiative of the individual
- cost of training.
- Is the application complete?
- Are funds available?
- Is the applicant employed or unemployed?
- Is the applicant occupational ready? (an individual who has previous training that is still required in the Labour Market and the person has been working with that training within the past 3-5years)
- Has the applicant been sponsored financially by an organization in the last five years?
- What is the Labour Market Demand based on FNI database of previously funded interventions?
- What is the broader Labour Market assessment?
- What is the date of the application?

› Counselling Services
Our full-time Community Liaison Officer provides employment counselling to clients seeking to improve their job options and opportunities.
Services provided include:- advising clients preparing funding applications
- assisting clients with resumé preparation
- providing clients with career, training, and employment information and resources
- matching clients with job opportunities
- assisting youth who are seeking employment
- helping disabled people acquire training, employment, and/or work experience
- uploading essential client data to HRDC
