Our Mi’kmaq Culture
The Mi’kmaq people have a dynamic culture; it has its own distinct qualities, but has always been shaped by exposure to new people and new ways. In Newfoundland—perhaps a little more than elsewhere in North America—very little traditional Mi’kmaq culture has survived intact to modern times.
The FNI is actively encouraging the revitalization of Mi’kmaq culture in Newfoundland, however. Under the guidance of its Cultural Committee, it has established a number of initiatives to help members rediscover our Mi’kmaq roots, and to understand Mi’kmaq culture and how it has evolved through exposure to Europeans and other Native peoples.
To this end, the FNI has sponsored and supported:
- research to document Mi’kmaq ancestors and heritage
- exhibitions and publications to bring our history to the public
- workshops
- cultural activities and events
- spiritual gatherings and retreats
Affiliated bands, youth councils, and women’s groups also sponsor and organize events that teach and celebrate traditional ways.
