Programs
The FNI’s mandate is to promote the social, cultural, economic, and educational
well-being of
Newfoundland Mi’kmaq. To that end, it provides members with programs, economic
opportunities,
and information that can help them improve their work lives and their health,
advance their education, and allow them to participate in band governance.
FNI program and service areas are introduced below.
Employment & Training
Current programs:
- Individual Training (education and skills development)

Fisheries
The FNI has three fisheries programs:
- Aboriginal Fishery Guardian Program
- Mi’kmaq Commercial Fisheries
- Mi’kmaq Alsumk Mowimsikik Koqoey Association (MAMKA)
Health
The FNI has established a health initiative to address health issues experienced by aboriginal people.
Currently we have a diabetes coordinator for:
- Diabetes Prevention Program
